Understanding The Poppy's Process

Understanding The Poppy's Process

STEP 1

Before beginning your Poppy’s application, unpack your kit, organize your materials, and review the application process from start to finish. Understanding the included products, prep steps, and overall workflow before starting will help ensure a smoother and more successful restoration process.

Remove Loose & Failing Clearcoat

Remove Loose & Failing Clearcoat

Step 2

Before applying the Poppy’s Wipe-On Clear Coat System, remove all loose, peeling, or failing clearcoat from the surface.

Use 600–800 grit sandpaper or a grey scuff pad to feather damaged edges and create a smooth transition between failing and stable areas. The goal is to leave the surface smooth, even, and properly prepared before moving to the next step.

Taking your time during this step helps improve:

  • Adhesion
  • Appearance
  • Durability
  • Overall finish quality

Wash & Scuff The Surface

Step 3

Thoroughly wash the surface using Poppy’s Pre-Cleaner and water while scuffing the area with a Light Duty Grey Scuff Pad.

This step helps remove:

  • Dirt
  • Oxidation
  • Loose debris
  • Surface contaminants

Once complete, rinse the surface thoroughly and allow it to fully dry before continuing to the next step.

A properly cleaned and scuffed surface helps the coating bond more evenly and consistently.

Tape & Protect Surrounding Areas

Step 4

Before applying the Poppy’s Wipe-On Clear Coat System, tape off surrounding trim, moldings, rubber seals, lights, emblems, and other non-painted surfaces near the area being restored.

Clean, precise masking helps protect surrounding surfaces, create cleaner edges, reduce cleanup time, and improve overall finish quality.

Taking a few extra minutes during this step can make the application process smoother and help deliver cleaner final results.

Final Surface Prep

Step 5

Before applying the coating, thoroughly wipe down the surface using Poppy’s Wax & Grease Remover with clean lint-free towels or microfiber towels.

This step helps remove dust, oils, sanding residue, surface contaminants, and remaining debris before application.

Pay close attention to panel edges, body lines, around emblems and handles, and tight crevices or corners.

For best results, wet one towel with Wax & Grease Remover, wipe the surface thoroughly, then immediately dry the surface using a second clean towel.

The surface should be completely clean, dry, and residue-free before application begins.

Mix The Clear Coat

Step 6

Before application, thoroughly shake the Poppy’s Wipe-On Clear Coat and Clear Catalyst.

For added durability and chemical resistance, mix:

8 parts Wipe-On Clear Coat to 1 part Clear Catalyst.

Only mix the amount needed for your current application. Once mixed, the product has a limited working time before curing begins.

After mixing:

  • Stir thoroughly
  • Allow bubbles to settle briefly if needed
  • Pour product into your paint tray or applicator area

Proper mixing helps ensure:

  • Consistent curing
  • Better durability
  • Improved chemical resistance
  • More uniform finish quality

Take your time during this step to ensure the coating is fully mixed before application begins.

Step 7

Before application, inspect and prepare all applicator pads and wiping towels to ensure they are clean and free of debris or loose fibers.

For larger flat surfaces, use the included applicator pads. For tighter areas, edges, body lines, and smaller sections, use the included recycled knit wiping rags for better control and precision.

Proper applicator preparation helps improve finish consistency and reduce lint or contamination during application.

Apply The Wipe-On Clear Coat

Step 8

Begin applying the Wipe-On Clear Coat using smooth, overlapping passes while maintaining a wet edge. Work one section at a time and follow the natural body lines of the vehicle for the cleanest result.

Keep the applicator evenly saturated throughout the process to help the coating self-level properly. Avoid dry passes, excessive pressure, or overworking the surface.

Apply in a controlled environment away from direct sunlight, wind, dust, or excessive heat. Proper lighting is highly recommended so you can monitor coverage and consistency as you work.

If an imperfection or missed area occurs, allow the coating to cure fully, lightly scuff the area, and reapply as needed.

Hood Application

Hood Application

Step 9

The hood is one of the most visible panels on the vehicle and should be approached carefully and methodically.

Start from one side and work across the panel using consistent overlapping passes. Maintain even hand movement and avoid stopping in the middle of the panel whenever possible.

Use proper lighting to monitor the coating as it levels. The goal is to achieve a smooth, uniform gloss with no dry spots or heavy buildup areas.

Large flat surfaces may require additional attention to maintain a consistent finish throughout the entire panel.

Roof Application

Roof Application

Step 10

Roof sections should be planned out before beginning application. Practice your reach and movement beforehand to avoid leaning against freshly coated surfaces.

Work side to side using controlled overlapping passes while maintaining a wet edge throughout the application process.

Because roofs are larger and harder to view during application, proper lighting and careful movement are extremely important.

Take your time and focus on maintaining an even, consistent finish across the entire surface.

Large flat surfaces may require additional attention to maintain a consistent finish throughout the entire panel.

Doors & Quarter Panels

Doors & Quarter Panels

Step 11

Doors and quarter panels require extra attention around handles, trim, body lines, and edges.

Before applying, practice your wiping movement around tighter areas so you understand your path before the coating touches the panel.

Apply using smooth overlapping passes while carefully working around recessed areas and contours. Watch closely for excess buildup near edges and detailed sections.

Inspect each section as you move around the vehicle to ensure an even finish and consistent gloss throughout the side panels.

Tailgate & Trunk Application

Step 12

Tailgates and trunk panels require careful attention around emblems, license plate areas, edges, and recessed sections.

Work slowly and methodically while maintaining smooth overlapping passes across the panel. Watch closely around badges, corners, and trim where excess product can build up.

Proper lighting and steady applicator control will help create a smooth, even finish across the entire panel.

Curing & Additional Coats

Curing & Additional Coats

Step 13

After application, allow the coating to cure in a clean, dry environment away from moisture, dust, and direct exposure.

Avoid water exposure for at least 24 hours after application. For best results, avoid washing the vehicle during the initial curing period.

Additional coats may be applied after proper cure time if desired. Before recoating, lightly scuff the surface to promote proper adhesion between coats.

If any imperfections are found after curing, the surface can be lightly sanded or scuffed and reapplied as needed.

Once fully cured, the finish will provide a deep gloss appearance while helping protect and restore faded or failing clearcoat surfaces.

Final Shine & Protection

Final Shine & Protection

Once the coating has cured, finish the vehicle using Poppy’s Detail Spray with Ceramic for added slickness, gloss, and maintenance protection.

Lightly mist the Detail Spray onto the surface one panel at a time and wipe clean using a soft microfiber towel. This helps remove light dust, fingerprints, or residue while enhancing the overall finish and depth of gloss.

The ceramic-infused formula helps maintain the freshly restored appearance while adding water beading and protection between washes.

For best results, use regularly as a maintenance spray to keep the finish looking clean, deep, and glossy.
