Wipe-on or spray-on clear coat? Choosing a Poppy's clear by application and finish

Preserving patina or original paint under a permanent clear comes down to two separate choices: how you want to apply it, and how much shine you want when it is done. Poppy's offers both application methods and a range of finishes, from its flattest clear to its glossiest. Pick one answer to each question.

Short answer

  • 1. How do you want to apply it? Wipe it on by hand with Poppy's Wipe-On Clear Coat, no spray gun needed. Or spray it: Wipe-On can be sprayed too, and Poppy's dedicated spray clears suit customers who already plan to spray.
  • 2. What finish do you want? From flattest to glossiest: Flatte Out, Matte, Satin, Gloss, and Glossed Out. Flatte Out is the lowest-gloss clear Poppy's offers, and Glossed Out is the highest-gloss.
  • Every option is a permanent two-part (2K) urethane clear coat. Wiping or spraying is a workflow choice, not a better or lesser clear.

From Poppy's Wipe-On Clear Coat Application Instructions, Spray-On Clear Coat instructions and FAQ, checked Oct 19, 2026.

Question 1

How do you want to apply it?

All three are permanent 2K urethane clear coats. The difference is the workflow.

Wipe on

Wipe-On Clear Coat, by hand

Poppy's Wipe-On Clear Coat is a permanent two-part (2K) urethane automotive clear coat built around an easy wipe-on workflow. Mix 8 parts Clear Coat to 1 part Clear Catalyst, with no reducer, and wipe it on with Poppy's applicator pad, one panel at a time.

  • No spray gun, compressor or booth needed.
  • Made for preserving patina, original paint, faded factory paint, surface rust, bare metal and fiberglass.
  • Comes in Matte, Satin and Gloss.
  • Over fully cured catalyzed (2K) paint or primer, follow the normal wipe-on instructions after cleaning, scuffing and testing a small area.
Spray

Wipe-On Clear Coat, sprayed

The same Wipe-On Clear Coat and the same 8:1 mix, sprayed with an HVLP gun: 1.4 mm tip, 35 to 40 PSI, two even coats about 5 minutes apart.

  • An option any time you prefer to spray the Wipe-On finishes.
  • Single-component (1K) paint such as rattle-can or lacquer, or paint you cannot identify: do not wipe it. Test a small, hidden area first and let it cure. If the test is compatible, spray following Step 8 of the instructions. Spraying avoids dragging the color, but it does not guarantee compatibility.
  • Plastic: spray only, after Stick All Adhesion Promoter and a test.
Spray only

Dedicated spray clears

Glossed Out, Satin Spray-On and Flatte Out are Poppy's dedicated spray clears: the traditional spray workflow, each a 2K urethane mixed 4 parts clear to 1 part activator or catalyst.

  • For customers who already plan to spray and have spray equipment, or prefer a conventional spray workflow.
  • Also the way to get the two ends of Poppy's finish range: Flatte Out (lowest gloss) and Glossed Out (highest gloss).
  • Spray gun only. Do not wipe them on.

Question 2

What finish do you want?

Choose the sheen separately from the application method. For patina and original paint, a lower sheen keeps more of the weathered, original look; a higher gloss brings back depth and shine.

  1. Lowest gloss

    Flattest

    • Spray onlyFlatte Out

Poppy's flattest, lowest-gloss clear. Helps keep a lower-sheen, more natural, original-looking patina while still adding a protective clear-coat layer.

  2. Low sheen

    Matte

    • Wipe-OnMatte Wipe-On

A low-sheen finish you can wipe on, one step up from Flatte Out. Shake it until it looks cloudy when poured.

  3. Middle sheen

    Satin

    • Wipe-OnSatin Wipe-On
    • Spray onlySatin Spray-On

The middle-sheen choice in Poppy's lineup, between flat and gloss. Satin Wipe-On is equal parts Matte and Gloss; Satin Spray-On is a separate spray product.

  4. Gloss

    Gloss

    • Wipe-OnGloss Wipe-On

A glossy finish you can wipe on. Once cured, Gloss can be wet sanded and buffed.

  5. Highest gloss

    Glossiest

    • Spray onlyGlossed Out

Poppy's highest-gloss clear, for customers looking for the deepest, wettest-looking finish in the lineup. It can be sanded with 1500 grit or finer and polished within 24 to 48 hours.

Flatte Out is the lowest-gloss clear Poppy's offers and Glossed Out is the highest-gloss. Poppy's does not publish gloss-meter readings. Where the exact look matters, try the finish on a small test panel first.

Patina preservation

Matching the finish to the look you want to keep

Preserving patina or original paint is about keeping its character. These are starting points; test a small area to see the result on your paint.

  • Flattest

Keep the flat, weathered patina look

Flatte Out if you spray, or Matte Wipe-On if you wipe. Both keep the sheen low while adding a clear coat.

  • Satin

A little life without looking freshly painted

Satin, wiped on or sprayed: the middle ground between flat and gloss.

  • Gloss

Bring back depth and shine on faded original paint

Gloss Wipe-On, or Glossed Out for the highest gloss Poppy's offers.

  • Semi-temporary

Not ready for a permanent clear

Vice Grip Garage Shine Juice is the semi-temporary patina preserver Poppy's offers. It enriches the existing finish, can be reapplied as needed, and comes off before a permanent clear later.

Wipe or spray

When the surface decides the method

From Poppy's instructions and FAQ. When in doubt, test a small, hidden area first, or email photos to help@poppyspatina.com.

  • Wipe it

Patina, original or faded factory paint

Wiping is the normal approach. Remove any loose or failing clear and feather the edges first.

  • Wipe or spray

    Catalyzed (2K) paint or primer

Fully cured catalyzed single-stage urethane, two-part polyurethane, catalyzed acrylic enamel and two-part epoxy primer can generally be wiped or sprayed. Clean, scuff, wipe down with Wax & Grease Remover and test a small area first.

  • Do not wipe

    Rattle-can, lacquer or other single-component (1K) paint

Do not wipe it: wiping can re-wet the paint and drag the color. Test a small, hidden area first and let it cure. If the test is compatible, spray Wipe-On following Step 8 of the instructions. Spraying avoids dragging the color, but it does not remove the possibility of a chemical reaction. If a reaction starts, stop.

  • Test first

    Paint you cannot identify

Treat it as solvent-sensitive and do not wipe it. Test an inconspicuous area and let it cure; if the test is compatible, spray following the instructions. Compatibility cannot be promised on a coating that cannot be identified.

  • Spray only

    Plastic parts

Plastic can be coated, but not by wiping. Clean it, apply Stick All Adhesion Promoter, then spray and test before coating the whole part. Flexible ATV and UTV panels can crack over time because the cured clear may not flex with them.

  • Not recommended

    Polished chrome

Wipe-On Clear Coat is not recommended over polished chrome, wiped or sprayed.

Spray-On Clear Coat instructions

From Poppy's Wipe-On Clear Coat Application Instructions, Spray-On Clear Coat instructions and FAQ, checked Oct 19, 2026. The two systems are separate products and are not interchangeable.

Before you clear

Prep is the same idea either way

Both systems need a solid, clean, scuffed surface. Follow the full instructions for the product you choose; this is the overview.

  • Remove anything loose

Sand off loose, peeling or failing clear and feather the edges into the stable finish (600 to 800 grit). The coating will not stabilize loose material.

  • Wash and scuff

Wash with Pre-Cleaner and water while scuffing every area to be coated with a Light Duty Grey Scuff Pad. Rinse and let it dry completely.

  • Tape off

Mask trim, glass and anything you do not want coated.

  • Final wipe-down

Clean with Wax & Grease Remover and let it flash off completely. For Wipe-On, use the two-towel method.

  • Check conditions and test

Both systems: 50°F to 77°F, air and surface. For Wipe-On, work out of direct sunlight with no rain expected during application or the first 24 hours. Test a small, hidden area first.

Questions

Clear coat questions

Is Wipe-On Clear Coat a real 2K urethane clear coat?

Yes. It is a permanent two-part urethane clear coat, mixed 8 parts Clear Coat to 1 part Clear Catalyst. It is not an oil or wax, and it comes off only by sanding.

Can I spray Wipe-On Clear Coat?

Yes. It is the same product and the same 8:1 mix whether you wipe or spray. Use an HVLP gun with a 1.4 mm tip at 35 to 40 PSI and follow Step 8 of the application instructions.

What is the flattest clear coat Poppy's offers?

Flatte Out, Poppy's flattest, lowest-gloss clear. It is spray only, and helps keep a lower-sheen, more natural-looking patina while still adding a protective clear-coat layer. If you would rather wipe on, Matte Wipe-On is the next step up in sheen.

What is the glossiest clear coat Poppy's offers?

Glossed Out, Poppy's highest-gloss clear, for the deepest, wettest-looking finish in the lineup. It is spray only. If you would rather wipe on, use Gloss Wipe-On Clear Coat.

Do I need a spray gun?

Not for Wipe-On Clear Coat, which is normally wiped on by hand. You do need one for Glossed Out, Satin Spray-On and Flatte Out, and for coating single-component (1K) paint or plastic, which should not be wiped (test first).

Can I wipe on Glossed Out or Flatte Out?

No. They are spray-only products with their own 4:1 mix and instructions, and they are not interchangeable with Wipe-On Clear Coat.

How do I get a satin finish?

Satin is the middle-sheen choice in Poppy's lineup. With Wipe-On, mix equal parts Matte and Gloss, then add Catalyst for the combined amount; the Satin kit includes both. If you spray, use the Satin Clear Coat Kit (Spray On). They are separate products, so test a panel if the sheen needs to match something.

How much do I need?

Poppy's does not publish one square-foot figure for Wipe-On. Kits sized for a full-size truck or SUV include two 32 oz cans; smaller kits include one. For the dedicated spray clears, 5 quarts cover a long-bed C10 on average. Email help@poppyspatina.com with your vehicle if you are unsure.
